Adult Passport Renewal

You may be eligible to renew your passport and/or change your surname on your passport by MAIL. This program is meant to save you time and travel expenses. It is easy, convenient, and secure. You can prepare your passport application package at any time and the process takes approximately two to three weeks from the date we receive your application to when you receive your new passport book by mail. If you are renewing your passport card by mail please expect six weeks to receive your replacement card.

Benefits to applying by mail:

  • You do not need to travel to the Embassy and wait to be interviewed by a Consular officer.
  • Processing time to renew passports by mail is the same as applying in person.
  • You can complete your application at your home, saving you time and money.

You may renew by mail if all of the following applies.

Your passport is:

  • Undamaged (other than normal “wear and tear”)
  • Issued with a 10 year validity
  • Issued within the last 15 years
  • Was issued in your current name (or you can document your name change with an original or certified copy of your marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order); and
  • Is submitted with your application (the most recent passport will be physically canceled and mailed back to you along with your new passport).

Prepage Package

2.1. Complete FORM DS-82 in full. Sign the application with the same signature as your most recent passport.

Please note:

  • Applicants are required to provide a Social Security number, if you were issued one, in accordance with 22 U.S.C. 2714a and 22 C.F.R 51.60(f)Failure to provide your social security number will delay processing of your application.
    • If you do not have a Social Security number, you will be required to submit a sworn statement.
    • If you do not remember your social security number please contact the Federal Benefits Unit in Manila, Philippines by email at FBU.manila@ssa.gov. Please instruct the Federal Benefits Unit to forward the number to your nearest Embassy or Consulate where you can retrieve it in person. (DO NOT mail Social Security cards to Embassy Bangkok or Consulate General Chiang Mai).

2.2. Your most recent U.S. passport

Your passport is:

  • Undamaged (other than normal “wear and tear”)
  • Issued with a 10 year validity
  • Issued within the last 15 years
  • Was issued in your current name (or you can document your name change with an original or certified copy of your marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order); and
  • Is submitted with your application (the most recent passport will be physically canceled and mailed back to you along with your new passport).

2.3. One passport photograph

You must provide one photo with your passport application. See photo requirements.

Photo Basics:

  1. Submit a color photo–2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm). Photos must be taken within the last 6 months.
  2. Use a clear image of your face. Do not use filters commonly used on social media.
  3. Have someone else take your photo. No selfies.
  4. Take off your eyeglasses for your photo.
  5. Use a plain white or off-white background.

Processing time is approximately 10 working days. If you plan to travel within the next two weeks, please make an appointment to submit your application. You must submit all required documents on your appointment day, including your confirmed itinerary/purchased ticketNO BANK DRAFT is required; you will pay at the Embassy.

Full-validity passports are printed in the United States and mailed to the embassy or consulate that processed the renewal. Once it arrives, the embassy or consulate will mail it to the address provided on your checklist along with your old passport. The old passport will be canceled and a letter to facilitate your Thai visa transfer will be included.

Thai immigration law requires entry/exit stamps and Thai visas be transferred into new passports. After receiving your new passport, please visit any Thai immigration office to have the visa transferred. You must take your new passport, canceled passport, and visa transfer letter.

To transfer other foreign visas please contact the respective country’s immigration authority or visa issuing agency. You may need to travel with your both new and canceled passport if the country does not transfer visas. American Citizen Services cannot assist with or provide any letter to facilitate the transfer of other foreign visas.
