It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Dr. Thanat Khoman. On behalf of the American people, I offer our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and the people of Thailand.
As a founding father of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, Dr. Thanat’s many contributions to the stability and prosperity of the region still benefit the people of the region today. The United States’ deep and broadening relationship with the region owes much to his original efforts.
As Thailand’s Ambassador to the United States and later Foreign Minister, he did much to strengthen ties between our nations. A toughminded patriot and statesmen, he defended Thailand’s interests with grit and grace. We mourn his passing.
