Passing of Ambassador John Gunther Dean

Members of the U.S. Embassy Bangkok community honor the memory of Ambassador John Gunther Dean who passed away on June 6, 2019 at the age of 93. Ambassador Dean served as the U.S. Ambassador to the Kingdom of Thailand from 1981 to 1985.

Ambassador Dean dedicated his life and career to public service, serving in the military during World War II and later serving in the post-war reconstruction efforts in both Europe and Asia before joining the U.S. Foreign Service as a diplomat.

During his tenure in Thailand, Ambassador Dean contributed greatly to the U.S.-Thai relations including in the fields of security, education exchange and development.

Ambassador Dean joined the U.S. State Department in 1956. He was a five-time Ambassador over a long and distinguished career. He is survived by his wife Martine, along with their daughter, Catherine Curtis; their sons, Paul and Joseph; and seven grandchildren.
