The Economic Section monitors economic, financial, energy, trade, investment, and labor trends in Thailand. The team presents U.S. views on bilateral and multilateral economic issues to the Thai government and the public. It also co-coordinates the Thai-U.S. Creative Partnership. Launched in 2010, this bilateral initiative brings together our business and government efforts in innovation; increases research and university exchange; and builds beneficial bridges between the private sector and academia.
The Section also conducts diplomatic engagement and outreach on environmental, science and technology, and global health issues in Thailand and regionally through frameworks such as the Lower Mekong Initiative and ASEAN. With other sections and agencies of the Embassy, the Economic Section also engages to combat trafficking in persons.
The Counselor for Economic Affairs is designated as the U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP). UNESCAP. With guidance from the International Organizations Bureau in the Department of State, the section represents the U.S. views at UNESCAP meetings.
