During a March 28 visit to Chiang Mai, Deputy Chief of Mission Peter Haymond and Consul General Jennifer Harhigh presided over the grand opening of the newly relocated American Corner at Chiang Mai University’s Faculty of Political Science and Public Administration. The corner is our oldest in Thailand; it opened in 2004 at the University Library. An enthusiastic crowd–including American Studies Club members, students, and professors–enjoyed the DCM’s lively presentation on Great and Good Friends and his introduction to Google Arts and Culture’s virtual museum tour. The DCM responded to several excellent questions from students about U.S. views on Thailand’s political situation. Following the dedication, the DCM and CG met with Young Southeast Asian Leadership Initiative (YSEALI) fellows to hear about their experiences in the United States and the way they are using connections forged with other alumni to tackle challenges such as urban planning, preserving cultural heritage, and boosting entrepreneurship.
